When it comes to grasping who your website audience is and what they desire from your site, it can be a bit tricky. You might have a basic understanding of your website users, but one of the best ways to understand who they are and what motivates them is by creating user personas. User personas can be another tool in your kit for really getting to know your audience and building the best website possible for them.

What are user personas?

User personas let you imagine an ideal person from your target audience. They're like guides helping you understand your users better and making it easier to tailor your website content to their specific needs, concerns, and behaviors. Depending on how large or small your website is, you could have as many as 10 personas or as small as 1-2 personas.

How to create a user persona

When first starting to craft a user persona, you want to take note of any survey data, feedback or other metrics that you have access to that allow you to start creating an imagined person. After you have this information you can start to create a persona. Give your persona a name, an age, some demographic details, a personality, goals, challenges, and how your website can address their needs. You can also take this a step further and add the elevator pitch that your website will provide to the user. A variety of templates are available online, if you find this process challenging initially.

What comes next?

Once you have created your user personas, you can use this information in a variety of ways. You can use this as you work through your website redesign to talk with your stakeholders about, you can present these personas to your leadership team, but most importantly, you can use them to guide you throughout your redesign process. They can be a constant reminder of who your content is for, ensuring that your content is targeted towards these individuals, and your website is speaking to them, providing them with the information they need and overall, meeting their needs.
